Summer is near, so let’s talk about sunscreen, facials and ways to treat your skin. Whether you spent too much time in the sun or over indulged in a delicious BBQ and cocktails- this can leave the skin vulnerable to heightened environmental damage which can lead to a variety of issues. Here’s why there is no such thing as a healthy tan (sorry!) and how you can maintain your ultimate skin this summer. Below you'll read what may happen to your skin and products to help treat.
Sensitive Skin: Heightened UVB and UVA rays both damage the skin on a cellular level. This can negatively impact the skin function and the skin barrier leading to redness, heat, and tingling when applying skincare. What do we recommend? SensiCalm Cleanser, Calm-R Serum and Hydra Calm with Clear Shield SPF 42 which is lightweight and great for skin types that are prone to redness, oiliness and even acne-prone. Stubborn, Long Term Discolouration: The cellular damage caused by UV rays trigger the skin into defending itself. One of its mechanisms it deploys is the production of pigment to try and stop UV rays from reaching the lower layers- a tan. This stress on the skin can lead to dark spots, even when the tan fades. What do we recommend? A brightening serum to help treat and prevent. The brightening formulations naturally brighten with plant extracts and lightening peptides to improve the appearance. Products to help with hyperpigmentation is Ever-Active C&E + Peptide paired with Ultimate Boost(optional), or EvenTone and Intellibright Complex which contain naturally powerful skin-lightening agents and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. We even have summer protocol peels in place with AlumierMD to help treat and nourish. You will be sent home with an aftercare kit as well! Accelerated Aging & the worsening of Acne Scars: Hanging out in the backyard and enjoying beverages and nibbles? Don’t be fooled into thinking the sun is good for your skin. Damage done to the cells that produce collagen can accelerate the formation of lines, wrinkles and skin laxity long term. What do we recommend? Adequate SPF protection can also help safeguard collagen and clinically validated peptides and retinol can reduce the appearance of lines and scarring too. A favourite serum of Erica’s is the Alumience A.G.E. A unique formula that reduces visible signs of aging caused by free radical damage, pollution (hello patio season!) and advanced glycation end products. This serum can be used day and night to provide ultimate daily protection from pollution and UV skin damage. Retinol can be used in the summer months however, Erica recommends using a lower concentration to retinol. Use only at night and wash your face in the morning.
Facials and sunshine: If you have a sunburn it is crucial to give your skin time to heal before getting a facial. Sunburns can leave your skin irritated and sensitive so typically it's recommended to wait at least a week. This time frame allows your skin to repair itself and ensures that the facial treatment won't cause any discomfort or exacerbate the burn. Protect and hydrate while you are waiting for your skin to heal and remember prevention is key! Prioritize sun protection by wearing sunscreen daily, seeking shade when the sun is strongest, and wearing protective clothing. Your skin will thank you, and you'll enjoy the benefits of facials without any concerns. A gentle and soothing facial with aloe infused products and chamomile will help to heal, replenish and nourish your skin. We look forward to seeing you for your facial.
